Detours, The Art of Uncommon Travel
Photographs by Elizabeth Fabry
The
book Detours is a collection
of essays, many of which have been previously featured
in the Times-Picayune. Dr. Fabry's lively style and wit
make his book a delightful read. It lends itself to skipping
and tasting the chapters like one samples appetizers.
Here one is treated to Hungarian wines, Transylvanian
cities and grand Budapest Cafes. Dr. Fabry gives only
a small sampling of the over 100 countries that he has
visited. Betsy Fabry's full page photographs add a visual dimension
to the essays.
Dr. Fabry was born in Budapest in 1919. After earning a law degree he became
an officer in the Hungarian army and served in WW II where he worked as a war
correspondent. Using the nom de guerre, Gombos, he saved the lives of many
Jews in Budapest during the Holocaust. After the war he became the Chief of
Cabinet in the new democratic government, followed by a diplomatic career in
Turkey. He came to the US in 1949 to work for Radio Free Europe. In 1962 he
became the director of the New Orleans World Trade Center. He and his wife
Betsy live in New Orleans.
